Agency banking is a smart, low-cost way to bridge the last-mile gap in financial access turning familiar local shops into trusted service points instead of requiring expensive new bank branches. It builds on the trust communities already have with local retailers. As a teacher with an IS background, I find this model interesting because it shows how existing infrastructure (retail networks) can be repurposed for financial inclusion rather than building entirely new systems from scratch.

From this module I learned that a banking agent can collect earns or savings from individuals to deposit in banks while earning a commission fee. I learned too that the agent must be able to communicate traction history to customers and any issues with them. They also have to get solar panels to rescue situations with no electricity.

Agency banking makes a lot of sense to me because it uses trust that already exists in a community. In my mobile money research in Chalala Township, I found that many people prefer using local agents over traveling to a bank branch because the agent is someone they know and can reach easily. It also means less time and transport cost spent just to access basic financial services. Running my own small business, I have seen how important it is for customers to have a nearby, familiar place to send or receive money. Agency banking builds on that same trust.

Agency banking uses individuals already operation their business as access point for customer to send money and withdrawal physical cash from their mobile value.
This create trust as customers are already familiar with the agents and agents enjoy the traffic to boost their own sales and make a commission out of it as well.
